Today's Question
Why do dreams, though alien, so often feel as if they reveal hidden truths about ourselves?

On the Uncanny Familiarity of Dreams
“Dreams can feel intimate and strange at once. I interpret that tension as an invitation to approach self-knowledge with curiosity rather than certainty: an experience may matter to us without delivering a hidden truth we must obey.”
Sometimes we wake from a dream with a sense of having touched something significant. We carry into daylight the echo of a feeling—a fleeting conviction that what we experienced in sleep both belonged to us intimately and, at the same time, issued from somewhere wholly other. Dreams can disorient us, sadden us, embolden us, or even reveal long-hidden anxieties. Yet their logic is the logic of another world—one whose rules we have always known, but which evaporate after waking.
